Vanessa & Brad’s Fun-Filled Rustic Beachside Wedding at The Sandbar

From matchmaker mates to beachside “I do’s” at The Sandbar — Vanessa & Brad’s day was sunshine, salty air, and one very well-earned yes.
There’s something about a January wedding on the Mornington Peninsula coastline that just feels right — warm sea air, golden light bouncing off the water, and that laid-back Australian energy that makes everyone instantly relax. Vanessa and Brad chose “casual fun” as the heartbeat of their day, and from the very first moment, that’s exactly what it was. Effortless, joy-filled, and centred on what mattered most to them: sharing every second with their family and friends.
The morning began with that beautiful kind of anticipation that only wedding days bring. Vanessa slipped into her elegant, form-fitting gown by Grace Loves Lace — timeless, modern, and perfectly her. The silhouette hugged in all the right places while still feeling relaxed enough for a beachside celebration. Her look was completed with flawless makeup by Ellie Davidson Beauty and soft, romantic waves styled by Hair by Emmalee — polished without ever feeling overdone. She was radiant in that understated way that doesn’t need to try too hard. Meanwhile, Brad looked every bit the modern gentleman in his earth-toned suit, a nod to the rustic coastal setting. The tones complemented the sand and sea beautifully, and when he stood waiting later that day, there was no doubt — this was a man absolutely certain about his bride.
Their ceremony unfolded at The Sandbar along Beaconsfield Parade in Middle Park, with the ocean quietly stretching behind them. It’s one of those venues that has a natural charm — relaxed but refined — and it suited them perfectly. Their celebrant, Jillian Lance, delivered a ceremony that felt deeply personal, filled with warmth, cheeky humour, and heartfelt storytelling. There were smiles from the very first words, giggles woven through the vows, and that unmistakable moment when two people say “I do” and you can feel every guest leaning in with them. It wasn’t stiff or overly formal. It was light, genuine, and brimming with love.
And speaking of love stories — theirs is one for the books. Rewind to February 2021, when mutual friends Brendan and Cara decided to play cupid. A simple question — “Does Cara have any single friends?” — set the wheels in motion. Vanessa, fresh off a self-imposed dating hiatus, wasn’t exactly searching. Brad wasn’t expecting much. But three “screened” photos later and a returned favour from Brad, what started as a joke became one of those sliding doors moments. Their first date took place on a 40-degree day in Narre Warren — hardly the most glamorous setting. Vanessa arrived early. Brad arrived and instantly stopped her in her tracks. They both had their polite exit strategies prepared, just in case. They never needed them. Within an hour, it was clear: no nerves, no games, just an easy, natural connection that neither could ignore.
The proposal carried that same blend of sincerity and quiet confidence. Before heading overseas for work, Brad asked Vanessa’s dad for permission — over WhatsApp, modern romance at its finest. In Munich, he clocked 36,000 steps in one day searching for the perfect ring. He found it. The proposal unfolded in Norwich, Vanessa’s hometown, after what began as a simple coffee and stroll through the city centre. In a park, as Vanessa rummaged through her handbag, she turned around to find Brad holding the ring. “Is that what I think it is?” she asked. “I can’t do this without you,” he replied. Then came a silence long enough for Brad to question everything — before confirming it was, indeed, a yes. It was perfectly them: heartfelt, slightly humorous, and completely unforgettable.
Back at The Sandbar, the reception carried that same joyful momentum. Guests cheered as the newlyweds entered, and the room quickly filled with heartfelt speeches — some tender enough to bring tears, others hilarious enough to bring the house down. With coordination by In2U Ceremonies, the evening flowed seamlessly from one moment to the next. And when DJ Dan from DJs Function & Events took over, the dance floor transformed. The beats kicked in, shoes were abandoned, and “casual fun” evolved into full-blown celebration mode. It was the kind of party where you look around and see every generation dancing together — exactly what Vanessa and Brad had hoped for when they said they were most looking forward to sharing their day with family and friends.
Yet, as a wedding photographer based here on the Peninsula, I’ll admit my favourite part of the day came when the noise faded and it was just the two of them on the beach. We stepped away for portraits as the light softened, and suddenly the world felt still. Vanessa and Brad strolled along the shoreline, hand in hand, laughing quietly, occasionally stopping to just look at each other as if to say, “We actually did this.” Those first moments as husband and wife are always magic — unfiltered, unposed, beautifully real. The ocean breeze played with Vanessa’s dress, Brad pulled her close, and the joy on their faces wasn’t for the camera. It was for each other.
If there’s one piece of advice they’d offer other couples, it’s this: prepare early and don’t leave things too late — give yourself time to enjoy the anticipation. And honestly, watching them soak up every second of their engagement, their ceremony, and their celebration, you could see how much that mindset shaped their day.
Vanessa and Brad’s wedding wasn’t about perfection. It was about presence. It was about laughter echoing over the water, about friends who once played matchmaker now watching it all come full circle, about a man who walked 36,000 steps for a ring and a woman who almost forgot to say yes. It was rustic, beachside, relaxed — and completely, unapologetically them.
